Very Good Film
I completely disagree with another reviewer that calls this film "pro-abortion". I never got the sense that the film took any side in the debate, it just showed an average American family dealing with a difficult decision. I thought the film did a great job of painting a picture of both "Americas" that exist today, smaller-town vs. big city. The performances were very good and believable. The earlier review also referred to the Josh Hopkins character as the "good guy", but I disagree with that as well. As one of the 2 central characters, you think he's going to change and grow as a person from his time in Lebanon, PA but in the end, I don't think he changes much at all. I found this film to be thought-provoking, well-acted and beautifully shot.
An afterthought of a Blu, an average Lifetime-ish movie
Even though this was not a Lifetime Channel film it definitely had the feel of one but what was most irritating was how this Blu was treated as a DVD. The menus are segmented/compartmentalized (not like any of the other Blus out there), there are no pop-up options once the movie is playing, and they slapped so many accolades on the cover art there is actually no listing of anything regarding this even being a BD.
The story follows the lives of several extended family members as they traverse their minefield lives in rural Pennsylvania and nearby Philadelphia. Certain themes surrounding religious lifestyles and controversial real-life decisions for some teens and the adults prevail, but I do not believe the hateful reviews posted here are worthwhile. The film tries to show the lives of these normal folk as best as possible. The acting is average to sometimes painful, but what makes this movie excel is the picture clarity. It comes across as a full screen almost, but the overall resolution is superb. The countryside, city, interiors and moving shots are all some of the best preservation I have seen on an independent film. The sound is questionable, and the cover art does not even list what it is. The supplements are a pain as they also work like a DVD and there are no play all options:
* Behind the scenes, 11:35 minutes. Interviews and candid behind the camera shots fill this part I believe in hopes of showing how much heart was involved in this production. A couple of the interviews showcased these kids have a future in the business if directed properly.
* Alternate opening, 4:41 minutes. Was better than the entire film and should have been left in as opposed to what they used. Gave a much better outlook as to what the film would be about and who would be the main characters later. Bad decision to cut it.
* Deleted scenes, 7 @ 9 minutes. For the pacing problems this film had and the constant attempts to have some kind of edgy camera emotions and bad music interludes, they should have just left these in.
No region coding listed, and the cover art wreaks of trying to push this film too heavily with six quotes from known reviewers about how this is the "best" film "of the year" and "vastly superior". I think if you have no expectations you might get something out of this but do not purchase this thinking it is a standard Blu disc, nor if you have any issues similar to the other reviewer here. 2 for the film and 1 for the amazing picture clarity.
